Online patient groups have a trust problem

Online patient groups can be a lifeline for people with rare diseases. They offer a community for sharing timely, valuable information, and provide emotional support and solidarity during difficult times. But many patients would rather stay anonymous, and that forces a tradeoff.

Public groups

Anyone can join, including people who don't have the disease or who have conflicting interests, such as salespeople.

Private groups

Safer, but hard to find. Someone has to review each applicant, and that reviewer ends up holding sensitive medical information that could be misused.

What the group learns, and what it never does

Learns

  • That you are a unique person
  • That you share the same diagnosis

Never learns

  • Your name, address, dob
  • Your other diagnoses, medicines, hospitals or visit dates
  • Which other groups you belong to

Active Groups

For anything else, search your condition and register interest if there's no group yet.
